The new roof of the Bahnhofplatz (station square) Winterthur serves city buses and their passengers. The “perforated skin” provides a smooth ambience under the architectural canopy, as well as an accentuated atmosphere in sunlight. In the evening, the entire waiting area is illuminated uniformly. The lighting also visually connects the construction to the buildings around it, i.e. the shopping street and the train station.
Next to the bus stop, down lights with a good glare-control evenly illuminate the pavement with focus on the edges, which facilitates a sense of security. The luminaires in the roof are especially developed for narrow openings but with the necessary wide light distribution.
The lower surface of the roof is specifically illuminated with the reflecting light from the floor. This lets the roof appear clearly as a solid and maintains its presence on the square even during the night.
Luminaires, embedded in the ground, highlight the base column of the roof and accentuated the architectural connection between the ground and roof. The linear light has a diffuse and slightly pastel colour which can be adjusted through subtle settings, depending on the occasion. The facilities of the “Stadtbusse Winterthur”, such as offices, relaxation rooms and lounges, are underground and designed according to their Needs.
For the complete exterior lighting we used LEDs with a constant luminous flux adjustment. This makes the fine-tuning of the luminosity possible with a constant level of illumination over time. In the late night hours the illumination will be dimmed to an even lower level.
