The starting point for the master lighting plan for the city centre of Singen were spherical blue luminaires, lamp posts, simple candelabras, etc. many different light fixtures and, in particular, many different lighting moods.
A follow-up analysis yielded several cornerstones for a design:
- Future lighting should improve orientation in the city centre.
- The lighting should invite people to take to linger and stroll.
- The new lighting system should highlight targeted areas and therewith improve the quality of nightlife in the city and enhance the unique beauty of Singen.
- The luminaires should not direct any light upwards in the night sky – reducing light pollution.
- Newest lighting technology should lead to higher energy efficiency and sustainability.
With these objectives in mind, the vast number of different lighting fixtures that had accumulated over the years was simplified. Light in the new lighting plan would be employed in a very targeted manner.
The old, varying colour temperatures of light – from very warm, even yellow light, to very cool light, received a more logical arrangement: from east to west illuminated water elements in blue, from north to south, illuminated elements of nature in green. This principle not only improved one’s orientation in the city, but also subtly enhanced the city’s two important trademarks: its proximity to Lake Boden and to the surrounding nature.
