Extension of Oerlikon railway station, Zürich Oerlikon, Schweiz

With a passenger flow of over 120‘000 persons each day, the trainstation of Zürich Oerlikon belongs to the big stations in Switzerland. At the same time it is an urban link between the old core of Oerlikon and the northern part of Zürich.
During thirteen years, massive extensions with additions and traverses took place while the trains were fully operating.

Especially in the areas of urbanization, light has a superior importance such as in the underground connection of the two districts.
It clarifies the concept of guidance and safety, puts an accent on architecture and helps the orientation. A special focus is on a differentiation of these aspects.
Specific illuminations highlight places, which appear in a special atmosphere such as the lightwall in PU West.
This floor-to-ceiling and rhythmic sparkling layer connects the two staircases. On one hand, its perspective escape appears nearly closed but on the other hand, from the side it visually opens up and sets free a view into a misterious depth. The striped pattern unfolds the effect in interplay with the vertical stripes of the concrete wall behind, as soon as the observer starts to move.

Together with bright, socalled baldachins it creates its own identity and an urban connecting element.
