Square of Constitutional Rights, Karlsruhe, Germany

Artist Jochen Gerz created an artwork for the Square of Constitutional Rights, which in the context of the space tackles the theme of justice and injustice. 24 sign posts document fragments of interviews with local inhabitants on the topic of civil rights.

The independently conceived lighting design attempts to accentuate the artwork and, through the medium of the municipal building materials, to represent the diversity of the population and their voices in the cobblestone pavement. The light emitting cobblestones are made of tinted synthetic resin that by day remain unnoticeable among the real cobblestones. Instead of seeing luminaires at night, one sees a radiant, traditional building material whose glow ensures the readability of the texts on the posts and allows visitors, due to the dark pavement, to immerse themselves in the artistic space.
