Intermediate Landing of Munich’s Main Railway Station, Munich, Germany

The Sperrengeschoss, provides access to the metro and the suburban trains and is also one of the main connections for train passengers to downtown.

In cooperation with Auer+Weber Architects we designed the lighting concept to correspond to the architectural needs, as well as to the comprehensive concept “Licht und Farbe” (Light and Colour), developed by vogtpartner, for Munich’s municipal utilities.
During the realization, the technical aspects were refined and implemented in coordination with the lighting planning firm Bartenbach.

The wall situated towards the city centre became a 132 meters long interactive lighting wall, which serves as an orientation guideline and – for newcomers – as a “silent communication welcome wall”.

The 5’000 integrated miniature LED downlights create a glare-free base lighting and generate a quiet overall appearance, which provides the user with a rapid information recognition.

Warm islands of light on the ground at the entrances minimize the contrast transition from outdoor to indoor. These spots of light provide associations of sunlight and are there to indicate a pleasant inviting access. The spots adapt, as well as the interactive lighting wall, to the time of the day and the number of pedestrians. This ensures minimal energy consumption.
