The tropical house is an innovative project in the harsher climate of the Bernese Mountains, direction Kandersteg on the Lötschberg line. Thermal heat from the interior of the mountain, easily accessible by the tunnel, makes possible the breeding and production of tropical fruits, as well as the farming of sturgeon. Aside from being a breeding facility, the complex is used for public education, events and gastronomy.
The façade of the main building is made of pre-fabricated concrete slabs. Their crag-like surface creates a geometrical interplay between shade and light that is suggestive of the surrounding landscape without attempting a realistic representation.
The gastronomy area is integrated in the greenhouse. Textile roller blinds are pulled across the upper glass windows to retain heat in the evening. Artificial lighting in the evening suggests a dark blue evening sky that subtly changes the perception of the space.
The festive restaurant atmosphere is created through the lighting of plants and table candlelight. Furthermore, long panels of cloth are illuminated with orange light.
